"I first made an attempt to get on the roads at 18 years of age. I went through two teachers, both of whom were uninspiring and, unsurprisingly, I failed my test. The whole process had been so traumatic and negative that I did not even contemplate getting behind the wheel again until 13 years later, at the age of 31. 17 months after having passed my theory test and with the expiry date looming, I started to look around for a driving instructor.
